Ma Quetilye Quenya?
Introduction
Welcome to this journey of learning Quenya!
My intention with this book is to make learning Quenya a playful, gradual, and highly practical experience. Imagine you are in a classroom, learning a living language step by step, focusing on communication and real-world-like scenarios rather than dry linguistic theory.
You don’t need any prior theoretical background in linguistics, nor do you need to possess a deep, encyclopedic knowledge of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Legendarium. If you love the sound of this Elven tongue and want to learn how to speak it, you are in the right place!
The structure of this book is inspired by the excellent language learning series Schwätzt Dir Lëtzebuergesch?. We will focus on dialogues, everyday situations, and building your vocabulary and grammar organically as we progress. The goal is to get you speaking and understanding Quenya in a natural, intuitive way.

How to read this book
- The chapters are in Quenya only. Pictures, dialogues and recordings carry the meaning. When you need a translation, every word of a chapter is listed at its end under Quettar (words) and Essi (names), and each one links to its entry in Eldamo, the lexicon this book follows.
- Á lasta! (“listen!”) followed by a number, such as 1.2, marks a recording: the first number is the chapter, the second the track. On the website the recording plays in place; in the PDF and EPUB the number tells you which file to play from the book’s audio folder.
- The Eldamo column says how a word is attested, in Eldamo’s own notation: Q. a word from Tolkien’s later Quenya; MQ. from his “Middle Quenya” writings of the 1930s and 1940s; EQ. from his early “Qenya” of the 1910s and 1920s; NQ. a Neo-Quenya neologism recorded by Eldamo;
*a reconstructed or extrapolated form;#a word attested only inside a longer word or name. Nothing is invented silently: our own coinages are collected in the Neologisms chapter. - Grammar is shown, not explained. Pattern tables set the pieces side by side, with the ending in bold after the stem. Say the rows aloud with the recording and the pattern will settle.
- Tengwar, the Elvish letters of The Lord of the Rings, get a short section in each chapter, a few letters at a time. Quenya writes its vowels as marks (tehtar) above the consonant they follow. A vowel with no consonant before it sits on a short stem, and a long vowel on a long stem. On the website, pointing at a Tengwar word shows its Latin spelling, except in the reading exercises.
- Exercises come at the end of each chapter under Carië (“doing”); the answers are under Hanquentar (“answers”), folded away on the website so you can try first.
